A MESSAGE FROM DR. TOM HOMAN

December 21,  2010

     My son, Ben, suffered a severe brain injury in December 2009 and was hospitalized for five months, the last four in Morgantown WV.  He has spent the last several months at the same facility in an outpatient rehab program which he has just completed.

     When Ben went to Morgantown, the doctor told me Ben's best chance for recovery was for me to stay with him which I did.  My practice suffered greatly in my absence.  I returned to work when Ben was released in April and even with Ben in outpatient rehab I have found that his needs don't allow me to spend the time I should practicing medicine.

     The next two years are critical to Ben's long term recovery and I feel, as his father, I have to put his needs first.  He has his whole life ahead of him and I want him to be as well as possible for his journey through it!

     So I will be leaving Charleston and moving back close to my childhood home.  I have alot of family there to help me with Ben.  Here I have none and being the only caregiver is very draining both emotionally and physically.

     He has done remarkably well.  Initially we were told he'd never wake up.  Now he will be taking some classes this spring semester and working a job.  I want to thank everyone for their prayers and thoughts.

     I want to thank all my wonderful clients.  It has been a joy and priviledge to serve you over the last twenty-six, well, closer to twenty-seven years.  My bedside manner was never much but I want you to know I always did my best and tried to be fair and honest with everyone.

     I want to ask all of you for one favor- PLEASE give Avalon a chance.  I feel very confident you will be happy there.  Some of Phillip's staff will be there to help you.  Just to give you a little incentive, all Phillips clients will get 20% off their first visit.

     Again I want to thank all of you for making me your veterinarian.  I wish you the best.  Please say a prayer for Ben and me when you think about it and give Avalon a chance to take care of your pets!
